@Zoldkabatos What's wrong with that fiddle? See this jsfiddle.net/mQpGn/1, You have an exception with your code somewhere.

If I press Enter in your code, it doesn't highlight the entered word. If it does for you, it's something with my browser.

It's not working for me here as i have provided you the hint how you can manupulate through enter key event and call your function. you javascript code gives error in browser, if you want to see, open my fiddle -> right click-> inspect elemet -> console. you will see error

change your event trigger to read as the following

i also recommend using onkeydown instead of onkeypress because onkeypress doesn't detect certain control keys being pressed.

The form is being submitted by the pressing of enter. You can attach an onsubmit event to the form, and return false to prevent submission (and true to submit). YOu can use this feature to validate the data before submitting, or to intercept your keypress event.

Alternatively, as commented on below, you can use event.preventDefault() to prevent the pressing of enter triggering a submit.

hey..thanks...it worked..@BillyMoon and also @WalledKhan .... thanks a lot..

If you're using normal Javascript, use the object.onpaste = handler; e.g.

<html>...
    <input id="something" type="text" />
...
  <script>
    var el = document.getElementById('something');
    el.onpaste = function() {
       // do you stuff here
    } ...
onchange

And using a library like jQuery to do it for you is nice.

But if you want to learn the innards of javascript... do it yourself! Sometimes it's better to reinvent the wheel when learning.

onpaste

@Kooilnc: No, it isn't. It's implemented in current versions of all major browsers.

You may try this in your keypress event

$("#txtContainer").keypress(function (e) {
        e.preventDefault();
        var key = window.event ? e.keyCode : e.which;
        if (key == '13') {
            doClick(buttonname, e);
        }
    });

Note: var key = window.event ? e.keyCode : e.which; and e.preventDefault() should be placed at first and return false; is not required because you've used e.preventDefault().

I think you're using the wrong event. Try using the "onKeyDown" event.

The keypress event should only be used when the pressed key also results in a character, such as the letters A-Z and so on (in a textbox for example).

I don't think the Enter-key (in this example) should trigger it, so that's why it might be worth trying to use the keydown event. Because that event will fire independently of the type of key that was pressed.

For some reasons IE considered the "Enter" key on your first machine as a visible character while on the second machine it didn't (could have to do with different versions), but anyways, I think the keydown event would be better.

You can read more about events (and browser support) here.

May be you can try use onchange event and then check with regex..

In some browsers (at least in Chrome), it isn't until you blur the textbox that it fires the onchange event.
