Yes, you can send email using gmail from localhost.

Pasting the code snippet from my blogpost.

This is the working code, and I often use it.

I don't recommend Pear Mail. It has not been updated since 2010. Also read the source files; the source code is almost outdated, written in PHP 4 style and many errors / bugs have been posted (Google it). I am using Swift Mailer.

Swift Mailer integrates into any web application written in PHP 5, offering a flexible and elegant object-oriented approach to sending emails with a multitude of features.

Send emails using SMTP, sendmail, postfix or a custom Transport implementation of your own.

Support servers that require username & password and/or encryption.

Handle large attachments and inline/embedded images with low memory use.

It is a free and open source you can Download Swift Mailer and upload to your server. (The feature list is copied from owner website).

The working example of Gmail SSL/SMTP and Swift Mailer is here...

// Swift Mailer Library
require_once '../path/to/lib/swift_required.php';

// Mail Transport
$transport = Swift_SmtpTransport::newInstance('ssl://smtp.gmail.com', 465)
    ->setUsername('username@gmail.com') // Your Gmail Username
    ->setPassword('my_secure_gmail_password'); // Your Gmail Password

// Mailer
$mailer = Swift_Mailer::newInstance($transport);

// Create a message
$message = Swift_Message::newInstance('Wonderful Subject Here')
    ->setFrom(array('sender@example.com' => 'Sender Name')) // can be $_POST['email'] etc...
    ->setTo(array('receiver@example.com' => 'Receiver Name')) // your email / multiple supported.
    ->setBody('Here is the <strong>message</strong> itself. It can be text or <h1>HTML</h1>.', 'text/html');

// Send the message
if ($mailer->send($message)) {
    echo 'Mail sent successfully.';
} else {
    echo 'I am sure, your configuration are not correct. :(';
}

This no longer works, I always get the return message "535-5.7.8 Username and Password not accepted". My credentials are fine and I have set the "allow less-secure apps" to ON. Anyone know a fix to this?

I found Nodemailer way easier to use than node-email-templates. Maybe it's because I was just trying to send basic plaintext/basic html email, but I found node-email-templates needed way more setting up, whereas Nodemailer was up and running in literally 2 minutes.

Other than gmail ? How can we configure for our own smtp server ?

are you using SMTP configuration for sending your email? try using phpmailer instead. you can download the library from https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer. i created my email sending this way:

function send_mail($email, $recipient_name, $message='')
{
    require("phpmailer/class.phpmailer.php");

    $mail = new PHPMailer();

    $mail->CharSet="utf-8";
    $mail->IsSMTP(); // set mailer to use SMTP
    $mail->Host = "mail.example.com";  // specify main and backup server
    $mail->SMTPAuth = true; // turn on SMTP authentication
    $mail->Username = "myusername";  // SMTP username
    $mail->Password = "p@ssw0rd"; // SMTP password

    $mail->From = "me@walalang.com";
    $mail->FromName = "System-Ad";
    $mail->AddAddress($email, $recipient_name);

    $mail->WordWrap = 50;                                 // set word wrap to 50 characters
    $mail->IsHTML(true); // set email format to HTML (true) or plain text (false)

    $mail->Subject = "This is a Sampleenter code here Email";
    $mail->Body    = $message;
    $mail->AltBody = "This is the body in plain text for non-HTML mail clients";
    $mail->AddEmbeddedImage('images/logo.png', 'logo', 'logo.png');
    $mail->addAttachment('files/file.xlsx');

    if(!$mail->Send())

Well, no, not without changing some parts since you're getting an error. You are currently trying to send mail via a SMTP server running on localhost but you aren't running any hence the ConnectException.

Assuming the code is OK (I didn't really check), you'll have to either run a local SMTP server, or to use a (remote) one (from your ISP).

Regarding the code, you can find samples in the JavaMail download package as mentioned in the FAQ:

Q: Where can I find some example programs that show how to use JavaMail? A: There are many example programs included in the JavaMail download package, including simple command line programs illustrating various aspects of the JavaMail API, a Swing-based GUI application, a simple servlet-based application, and a complete web application using JSP pages and a tag library.

Hi, what actually is a smtp server? Is it included and bundled in Email server? Or we have to setup smtp separately ?

dovecot is an SMTP server. Ask yourself this question: what software does Google run that you're sending this e-mail to? They're running some sort of a smtp server. Dovecot is good; dovecot and postfix together is better. I think postfix is the smtp part and dovecot the imap part.

You can use config email by codeigniter, example using smtp (simple way) :

$config = Array(
        'protocol' => 'smtp',
        'smtp_host' => 'mail.domain.com', //your smtp host
        'smtp_port' => 26, //default port smtp
        'smtp_user' => 'name@domain.com',
        'smtp_pass' => 'password',
        'mailtype' => 'html',
        'charset' => 'iso-8859-1',
        'wordwrap' => TRUE
);
$message = 'Your msg';
$this->load->library('email', $config);
$this->email->from('name@domain.com', 'Title');
$this->email->to('emaildestination@domain.com');
$this->email->subject('Header');
$this->email->message($message);

if($this->email->send())

WooHoo! I figured it out without using jQuery...in other words I did it the long way. I did a ton of research and trying things out. How it works is when the user clicks on the button labeled submit JavaScript\DOM gets and stores the values from the three form fields, than XMLhttpRequest\AJAX gets the values that JavaScript\DOM stored and sends them to the PHP file, than the PHP file sends me an email with the form data, and finally httpRequest.responseText puts a thank you message next to the form for the user to see. All of this gets done withOUT the page refreshing. Yeah! Here is the coding that works:

<form id="contactMe">
 <input type="text" class="inputElement initialColor" name="fname" id="fname">
 <input type="text" class="inputElement initialColor" name="email" id="email">
 <textarea rows="6" class="inputElement" name="moreinfo" id="moreinfo"> </textarea>
 <input type="button" class="sendButton" id="submitbutton" value="Send">
</form>
<div class="errormsg"></div>
<div class="formsent"></div>
function makeRequest()
{
    var httpRequest;
    var personName = document.getElementById('fname').value;
    var emailAddress = document.getElementById('email').value;
    var comments = document.getElementById('moreinfo').value;

    if (window.XMLHttpRequest) {
      httpRequest = new XMLHttpRequest();
    } else if (window.ActiveXObject) {
      try {
        httpRequest = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP");
      }
      catch (e) {
        try {
          httpRequest = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
        }
        catch (e) {}
      }
    }

    httpRequest.onreadystatechange = alertContents;
    httpRequest.open("GET", "contact.php?name="+personName+"&email="+emailAddress+"&comment="+comments, true);
    httpRequest.send();

    function alertContents()
      {
        if (httpRequest.readyState === 4 && httpRequest.status === 200)
        {
            var thankYou = document.querySelector('.formsent');
            thankYou.innerHTML = httpRequest.responseText;

            var clearForm = document.getElementById('contactMe');
            clearForm.reset();
        }
      }
}

PHP

<?php
$name = $_GET['name'];
$email = $_GET['email'];
$comment = $_GET['comment'];

$to = 'email@fakeDomain.fake';
$subject = 'Email From Website Form';
$msg = "$name has sent an email.\n" .
"You can reply to $name at: $email\n" .
"Question or Comment: $comment\n";
mail($to, $subject, $msg, 'From: ' . $email);

The hardest part was figuring out how to pass variables from JavaScript to PHP. It took time to find really good full examples, and to also find explanations of how it works. A few notes: * I used AJAX (XMLHttpRequest object) to open a communication line between JavaScript and PHP. * This entire operation can be done in jQuery with less lines of coding. But, I wanted to know how it worked the long way. So, now when I look at the jQuery coding I understand what it is doing.

You could have instead asked for the logic; it's simple. When you submit the form, you validate it with JS function and on success, you call AJAX and at the end of this function, you return false. In success function of AJAX, you alert the thank you message. In backend, you retrieve the data sent by AJAX and use mail function to send the mail. Once mail is sent, you echo a flag status which you verify in success function of AJAX. So, this communication do not lets page to reload and send mail as well!

@marcus - I do have form validation done first, than once validation passes it calls the Ajax function. Also, I noticed that return false didn't always work (e.preventDefault does)...and I didn't need to stop default behavior anyway since I used type="button", NOT type="submit".

@marcus - I don't know PHP that well. Why did you suggest echo a flag? What does flag do?

flag is any identifier you use to identify the result. Suppose, you use echo "success"; or echo true; in php file, then "success" and "true" are called as flags as you can now use their values in JS to check against if the script has run properly or not. And yeah, as you have used type=button, no need of return false. However, e.preventDefault will prevent future click of events (I guess) and so return false is the better approach as it does perform the task needed.

as @Robert Wade said, you can pass the "CLIENT_ID_NUMBER" from the server side language which you may be using to generate your <img> tag.

$client_id_number = // your generated unique number;

Then append this variable in your img tag

echo '<img src='"http://www.google-analytics.com/collect?v=1&tid=UA-12345678-1&cid="'.$client_id_number.'"&t=event&ec=email&ea=open&el=recipient_id&cs=newsletter&cm=email&cn=Campaign_Name />"'>;

and send it in your email. Since you can't use Javascript, you will have to use a server side language to make this happen. For adding dynamic behaviour, you will have to use some kind of programming language either JS or anything else because HTML itself doesn't provides logic. Hope this helps you.

are you using SMTP configuration for sending your email? try using phpmailer instead. you can download the library from https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer. i created my email sending this way:

function send_mail($email, $recipient_name, $message='')
{
    require("phpmailer/class.phpmailer.php");

    $mail = new PHPMailer();

    $mail->CharSet="utf-8";
    $mail->IsSMTP(); // set mailer to use SMTP
    $mail->Host = "mail.example.com";  // specify main and backup server
    $mail->SMTPAuth = true; // turn on SMTP authentication
    $mail->Username = "myusername";  // SMTP username
    $mail->Password = "p@ssw0rd"; // SMTP password

    $mail->From = "me@walalang.com";
    $mail->FromName = "System-Ad";
    $mail->AddAddress($email, $recipient_name);

    $mail->WordWrap = 50;                                 // set word wrap to 50 characters
    $mail->IsHTML(true); // set email format to HTML (true) or plain text (false)

    $mail->Body    = $message;
    $mail->AltBody = "This is the body in plain text for non-HTML mail clients";
    $mail->AddEmbeddedImage('images/logo.png', 'logo', 'logo.png');
    $mail->addAttachment('files/file.xlsx');
