I created a working demo that shows how to use the Google Maps API Directions Service in Javascript through a

DirectionsService
  • DirectionsRenderer object to render the returned route on the map

You can use the Web Services using an API_KEY issuing a request like this:

An API_KEY can be obtained in the Google Developer Console with a quota of 2,500 free requests/day.

A request can return JSON or XML results that can be used to draw a path on a map.

transit_mode - Specifies one or more preferred modes of transit. This parameter may only be specified for transit directions.

transit - requests directions via public transit routes (where available). If you set the mode to transit, you can optionally specify either a departure_time or an arrival_time. If neither time is specified, the departure_time defaults to now (that is, the departure time defaults to the current time). You can also optionally include a transit_mode and/or a transit_routing_preference.

So maybe not all places, the transit mode are available.
