On an AutoCompleteTextView, you don't have direct access to the DropDownListView, that's why you cannot add header and footer views there.

A solution to your problem will be to use 2 types of views in your list, and set the first/last row to have the header's/footer's layout. This can be done on the adapter, which you create yourself.

Thanks for suggestion @Udinic, as you said dropdown of autocompletetextview can not be controlled in many ways {the way i wanted to}. plus header and footer view both needed for it, which need to be show/hide for some conditions for my application, Later just changed my Autocomplete textview to simple EditText and provided popupmenu for it and its well controllable :)

I'm not quite sure there's a direct way, but knowing the selected item from the list you can know its position in your mLIST using indexOf() method on your list.

That assuming each item is unique, if not, this will not work.

For controlling the way you display items in your autocomplete view, you have to set the textViewResourceId in your adapter. You can use the ArrayAdapter and give android.R.layout.simple_dropdown_item_1line as the textViewResourceId as shown below.

if you want to create your own style for the items displayed, please create an XML with TextView as the root element like this (lets name it my_custom_dropdown.xml with black color text and white background)

You are most of the way there. I recommend using an AutoCompleteTextView and simply binding your List to an ArrayAdapter. (An AutoCompleteTextView already has the dropdown feature to help the user select between similar entries and doesn't require a TextWatcher.)

You can use CursorAdapter.setFilterQueryProvider to filter the list. I have an example on my blog -- it's in the context of an AutoCompleteTextView, but it should work the same way for a ListView.

I guessed that, you are getting a list of data from the server based on the string in the autocomplete textview. So that the adapter loads the filtered list whenever the text changes. Try to implement CursorAdapter. Its the better solution for your problem. Just try and let me know.

yes... I have to override getFilter() in Adapter, extends AutoCompleteTextView and override enoughToFilter() to always return true. So this prevents AutoCompleteTExtView dismiss and show.

But if anybody knows a solution to this, I'd greatly appreciate it and would be glad to trade it for some bounty points.

One workaround that came to my mind is now to extend the dialog to the very bottom of the screen but leave the background transparent, so it looks the same as now, but actually has a height that wouldn't cut off the list. I will give that a try...

i have this bug right now on android.R.layout.select_dialog_item and this only for one autocompletetextview of the 2 I have. I just found the differentiating factor : this versus context.

I have also this problem, I think it seems to be a bug, i solved this by the following way

Second change your AutoCompleteTextView focusable property to true in onTouch event of that view.For that you have to implement onTouchListener to the AutoCompleteTextview.

Whenever you touching on that AutoCompleteTextView, you should change focusable property to true otherwise keep it focusable to false. So that the dropdown list is never appear when the view is in unfocusable state.

It shows dropdown list automatically, only when the view is in focusable state which is annoying to user, otherwise it works good.

To set the popup background use popupBackground xml property for AutoCompleteTextView. I also advice you to use Themes for text colors, sizes etc. When you want to style a list on the AutoCompleTextView popup (for example change a divider) you can do it from theme settings like that:

You can either adjust the layout so that there is more space below the AutoCompleteTextView

you can change the dropdown height android:dropDownHeight and set some high value, this would work when its inside a scrollView and the AutoCompleteTextView is near the top.

To display the list of options on focus do something like this

I already set this 300dp for dropDownHeight and it'll goes always upward and also display list when it focus by this focuschangelistener. The problem is for small device.

Did you try putting it in a scroll view and moving the AutoCompleteTextview near the top ?

actually I have put this in tab so on top of tab are available and that much space is there so I have test this to place this control with some top margin

Turns out there is a weird glitch that happens very often if my dynamically loading list is very small and my original list (which comes from my RES folder) is substantially large (500 or so). It doesn't glitch out when the dynamically loaded list is large, perhaps it gives enough time to the AutoCompleteTextView to show suggestions while loading? Not sure about that.

Anyways, the solution was to lower my original size of the arraylist in my res folder
